Apple has released the third iOS 10.3 public beta for testing on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. iOS 10.3 public beta 3 follows the third developer version of the upcoming software update. Apple’s public beta program is free to participate in unlike its paid developer program. iOS 10.3 will be released to everyone likely this spring, and the public beta allows more users to test pre-release versions of the software update before it’s finalized....

iOS 13.3.1 for iPhone and iPadOS 13.3.1 for iPad Several bug fixes in today’s update, including a Communication Limits workaround that lets kids add contacts without entering a Screen Time passcode. It also addresses issues with editing Deep Fusion photos taken on iPhone 11 and fixes issues related to the Mail app. In addition, this update fixes a location tracking bug that Apple received scrutiny over last month. The newest iPhones were still requesting location data even though all tracking was disabled in Settings....

Apple released OS X 10.7.3 build 11D36 to developers this evening, and it is available on the Developer Center. Apple asked developers to focus on iCloud Document Storage, Address Book, iCal, Mail, Spotlight, and Safari. The delta update of this build tops out at 986 MB and the combo update weighs in at 1.25 GB. The OS X 10.7.3 should roll out to Lion users in the coming weeks, so sit tight....

Right on schedule, Apple has released the sixth preview of the upcoming OS X Yosemite to developers today. This new seed comes two weeks following the previous release, and it likely continues to bring performance enhancements, interface tweaks, and bug fixes. Following Apple’s revision to its Q1 2019 earnings, it was revealed that Tim Cook would hold an all-hands meeting to discuss the results with Apple employees. While the majority of the details from that meeting have yet to leak, John Gruber at Daring Fireball today has an interesting tidbit. During the all-hands meeting, Tim Cook reportedly stated that Apple replaced 11 million batteries over the duration of the $29 replacement program....

Apple is reportedly asking its chipmaker TSMC to increase production of the A13 processor due to higher-than-anticipated iPhone 11 demand. Bloomberg reports that the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro are selling particularly well in China. The report says that the demand for iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro is “outperforming the market and Apple’s expectations.” In turn, Apple is asking TSMC to increase production of the A13 processor to keep up with that demand....

Apple’s WebKit team today proposed a new Community Group to discuss the future of 3D graphics on the web. In a blog post on the WebKit blog, Apple’s Dean Jackson wrote about the company’s proposal to develop a standard API that exposes modern GPU features. W3C Community Groups allow all to freely participate, and we invite browser engineers, GPU hardware vendors, software developers and the Web community to join us....

Apple has released iTunes 11.3.1 (Mac, Windows) for OS X Mavericks today with a bug fixes for subscribed podcasts not receiving updates and for podcast episodes lists becoming unresponsive while browsing. The update is available in Software Update in the Mac App Store. The previous iTunes release, iTunes 11.3, brought iTunes Extras in HD to the Mac, and iTunes 12 is coming this fall with design updates for OS X Yosemite....

Update 11/30: Apple has issued a new version of the update with the same version number that appears to fix the File Sharing authentication issue caused by the initial fix. If you’re running macOS High Sierra, it’s time to update your Mac as soon as possible. Apple has released a security update that addresses the security vulnerability discovered yesterday afternoon. The update is available now through the Mac App Store....

Apple has started prompting iOS 10.3 beta users to enable two-factor authentication with a new push notification. The prompt has only started appearing over the last 24 hours or so and seems to have hit most users in the middle of the night last night. If you swipe on the notification, you’re taken to a screen in the Settings app that explains what two-factor authentication is and how to enable it for maximum security....

Apple this afternoon has seeded the first beta of macOS 10.14.5 to developers. The update is available to developers through the System Preferences app on macOS. Earlier today, Apple released iOS 12.3 to developers, as well as tvOS 12.3 for the Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K, and software version 7.3 Apple TV 3. These updates include the new TV app, as well as access to the Apple TV Channels functionality, which allows you to subscribe to third-party subscriptions directly in the TV app....

Following a lengthy beta period, Apple has now released iOS 9.3 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. iOS 9.3 is a significant feature update for Apple’s mobile operating system, with brand new additions like Night Shift, Touch ID Notes and more. iOS 9.3 runs on every iOS 9-capable device, including the brand new iPhone SE. Towards the beginning of last year, Apple’s iBooks and iTunes Movies services in China were shut down by a government agency. Now, Apple is again facing problems in the country, this time due to third-party applications by The New York Times. According to a report from the publication, Apple has removed the NYT news apps from the App Store… According to the report, Apple removed the apps following a request from Chinese authorities....

While individual retailers have been announcing support for Apple Pay as more NFC terminals enable the service, it’s still hit and miss on vending machines and other self-serve, unattended hardware. USA Technologies today announced it’s bringing support to around 200,000 of these self-serve payment terminals that its customers use for everything from coffee brewers to vending machines, kiosks, laundry equipment and pay parking terminals. “Our customers are excited to accept Apple Pay at the self-serve locations they operate,” said Stephen P....

While we’d all expected plastic bank cards to be replaced by apps eventually, the CEO of mobile banking startup Moven is suggesting that Apple’s backing could mean the end of physical bank cards within 2-3 years. The additional sweetners here are three fold. Firstly, tokenization will avoid much of the type of breaches we’ve seen at Target and Home Depot because the token is only a one-time use thing. Secondly, the move to tokens and the combination of biometrics, etc allow for the emergence of a ‘cardholder present’ approach to interchange rates that will potentially give mobile payments a competitive merchant rate....

Following Apple’s revision to its Q1 2019 earnings earlier this month, the company is said to be planning to reduce its hiring. According to a report from Bloomberg, Apple plans to “cut back on hiring for some divisions” following its slowdown in iPhone sales. Tim Cook reportedly made the announcement at Apple’s all-hands meeting earlier this month. The exact plan is still unclear, with Cook not having decided which divisions would experience hiring cutbacks....

Update: Beta 5 for iOS 13, iPadOS 13, and tvOS 13 are now available. No updates to macOS Catalina or watchOS 6 beta yet today. Apple is releasing the fifth developer beta version of iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 (likely alongside new seeds of watchOS 6, tvOS 13) today. Apple’s public beta builds should follow at a later date after the latest developer beta has been tested in the wild....

Update: Raifeissen Bank in the Czech Republic also today enabled Apple Pay on all their cards, including partner/branded creditcards. Apple Pay today continues its European expansion, coming to new banks in Austria, Germany, and the Netherlands — some five years after the mobile wallet service first launched in the US. Apple has announced its latest Apple Pay promotion, this time in celebration of Earth Day. Apple says that from now through Earth Day, which is April 22, it will donate $1 to Conservation International for every Apple Pay transaction made on Apple’s website, through the Apple Store app, or in Apple Stores. Apple explains the work that Conservation International does: Now through April 22, Apple will donate $1 for every purchase made with Apple Pay on apple....

Apple today has given its Mac in Business website a major design overhaul, introducing a new tagline that says it’s “a brand new day for business.” The design refresh comes on the heels of Apple and IBM’s enterprise agreement hitting more than 100 apps across 14 industries and 65 professions earlier today. “Organizations everywhere are realizing the potential that Mac brings to their employees by giving them the freedom to use the tools they already know and love,” Apple touts on the new webpage....
