As pointed out by Tonymacx86, Apple has released the Open Source code of OS X 10.10 Yosemite, otherwise known as Darwin 10.10.0. This includes the xnu-2782.1.97 kernel. The update occurred last night and is available to anyone who wants to root around Apple’s open source code. Apple is just about exactly on schedule from last year’s Mavericks release a year and a week ago. Darwin forms the core set of components upon which OS X and iOS are based....

Code analytics platform SourceDNA has found hundreds of apps on the App Store that used private APIs to collect private user data, like email addresses and device identifiers, slipping under Apple’s radar in the approval process. The code got into these apps through the inclusion of a mischievous third-party advertising SDK, which secretly stored this data and sent it off to its own servers. Apple has now verified the SourceDNA report and is removing all of the apps that included the advertising SDK from the store, as using private API calls is a breach of App Review Guidelines....

What’s Included in iOS 10.3.1? The update is quite small, coming in at just 28 Mbs. Users can update over Wi-Fi or from within the iTunes software. For such a small update, though, I wish Apple would at least let me download it on my mobile data. Release notes for iOS 10.3.1 are very minimal but one thing caught my attention: a fix for a known vulnerability found in the Wi-Fi chip, which could potentially allow an attacker to execute malicious code....

In addition to new seeds for its mobile platforms, Apple has released the second Developer Preview of the upcoming OS X El Capitan for Macs. The update is available via Software Update in the Mac App Store. Similarly to iOS 9, El Capitan brings many under-the-hood enhancements in addition to new features like a split-screen mode for core applications, a new Notes app, and an enhanced Mission Control view. New changes and fixes in the second preview have already been discovered and are included in updates below....

Apple has removed Skype from the App Store in China following a request from the Ministry of Public Security … Apple confirmed the action to the NY Times. For the moment, Skype does continue to operate in the country, but the paper says that it’s unclear how long this will remain the case. The government uses the so-called Great Firewall of China to block access to both websites and a number of messaging services, including Gmail, Facebook, Telegram, Twitter and – most recently – WhatsApp....

Digitimes reported that Apple is continuing talks with the struggling Sharp over its IGZO display panels. Before making a switch, the company is evaluating whether Sharp’s supply will be able to meet the demand of the iPhone, iPad mini, and 10-inch iPad throughout 2013. The sources said Apple is in further discussions with Sharp over IGZO panel production capacity estimates for 2013 and is also inquiring about whether AU Optronics’ (AUO) L5C line could be used to produce the technology....

According to a new illustration surfaced today by the Atlanta Business Chronicle, Apple is planning a brand new design for its upcoming store in Atlanta’s Lenox Square shopping center. The multilevel space is said to replace Apple’s existing single floor store inside the mall, which first opened in 2002. While details are light, the report states that plans were recently shown at a Buckhead Development Review Committee meeting for an unidentified tenant at Lenox Square....

Following a series of software releases over the last week including OS X 10.9.3, iTunes 11.2, Safari 7.0.4, and Podcasts for iOS, Apple has tonight released a point update to its iAd Producer software in the developer center. The previous update to the software was released earlier this year in March. The update includes, among other improvements, support for full-screen iPhone banner iAd creation. Apple will release third public betas of iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 to testers today. This comes after yesterday’s release of iOS 14 beta 3 to developers, bringing changes such as new Clock widgets and more. Apple started public beta testing of iOS 14, iPadOS 14, and tvOS 14 two weeks ago. Going forward, we generally expect new versions to be released every two weeks. The second iOS 14 public beta likely includes the same changes introduced in the third developer beta....

Alongside today’s new iOS 8.4 beta, Apple has released yet another beta build of the upcoming OS X Yosemite 10.10.4 to developers. Today’s build is labeled as build number 14E17e, and it is available via Software Update in the Mac App Store for developers running earlier versions of the beta. A new Public Beta for AppleSeed users is available as well. It is possible that 10.10.4 will be released in June alongside iTunes 12....

[UPDATE: Brazilian Carnival-themed ad included below the fold.] Apple has published new iPhone 7 Plus video ads that highlight Portrait Mode with the flagship model’s Camera app. The first video is called Soul Mate and explains how Portrait Mode makes the subject stand out from the background when Blur Effect is applied. While Portrait Mode was first tuned to work best with people’s faces, this video demonstrates the feature on a dog sitting still (which may be the hardest part)....

Apple today released an update to GarageBand for Mac with version 10.3 introducing free downloadable Artist Lessons alongside new Drummers and sounds. Included in today’s update is a push towards educational content for the classroom with in-app Artist Lessons now available for free in 150+ countries. Previously the content was available for $4.99 as in-app purchases in just 20 countries. Other new features in GarageBand below: The update also includes new traditional Chinese and Japanese instruments including the Guzheng, Koto, and Taiko drums alongside five new Vintage Mellotron patches....

Three weeks after the previous beta, Apple just pushed out iTunes 10.5 beta 9. This leading up to their iPhone media event slated for October 4. The beta will be required for devs interested in trying out the upcoming iTunes Match service and of course includes the usual list of known issues. Alongside the new iTunes 11 desktop app, Apple has released a new version of its Remote iOS app. Remote is Apple’s iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch app that allows you to control iTunes and Apple TV media playback. The new update introduces a completely revamped interface for the iPad. The old Remote app on the iPad featured a UI akin to that of iTunes 10, and this new version looks much like the new iTunes 11 computer app....

In line with our reporting from yesterday and from September, Apple has provided Mac users with a pair of important updates. Backing up rumors that have surfaced over the past couple weeks regarding Apple’s media event on Thursday, ArsTechnica brings more wood to the fire and claimed Apple will announce a “GarageBand for E-books” on Thursday. Apple already dropped a few hints, such as “Join us for an education announcement,” when it sent out invites last week. Wall Street Journal also announced that Apple has reportedly been working with publisher McGraw-Hill since June....

TechCrunch’s lead Apple reporter Darrell Etherington quietly stopped writing for the news site at the end of June, and we’ve learned that he left to take up a job in Apple’s PR office in Toronto, Canada. Etherington’s modern journalism expertise should be beneficial for Apple as it improves its approach to press relationships, while the admiration of his former colleagues should go a long way in fostering those ties… Etherington’s move is just the latest in a string of journalists who have been hired by Apple, but none of the career changes appear to be related....
