Following last week’s release of macOS 10.14.5, Apple today has released a supplemental update for certain MacBook Pro users. Apple says today’s update resolves certain issues with the T2 Security Chip. The supplemental update is available for the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Apple’s T2 Security Chip. Apple says the update is recommended for all users of that machine as it “addresses a firmware issue.” Apple has not yet updated its security webpage with details on what specifically the firmware issue is....
Apple is planning a worldwide overnight ‘refresh’ of its older retail stores on the night of May 16, according to our own sources. We understand that this is specifically for older and smaller stores that aren’t suitable for the full redesign we’ve seen in flagship stores. Apple said during recent earnings calls that the number of active Apple Pay users had doubled year-on-year, with transactions more than tripling – but didn’t reveal any numbers. Loup Ventures has today published new estimates, suggesting that there are now 127M active Apple Pay users globally, up from 62M a year ago. However, says the firm, that still represents a relatively small percentage of active iPhones … The firm estimates that only 5% of US iPhones have Apple Pay activated, contrasting with 11% of international iPhones....
Apple’s flagship retail store on 5th Avenue in New York City has been undergoing renovations since January, and now Apple appears to be planning to replace the iconic glass cube entrance at the site. A building permit discovered by BuildZoom has been granted for the “full removal” of the gigantic glass structure at the Apple Store’s entrance. Apple has released the fourth iOS 10.2.1 beta for developer testing on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. iOS 10.2.1 is likely a bug fix and performance improvement release. Just ahead of its expected release later this month, Apple has released the sixth OS X 10.11.4 developer beta for Mac users to test. The update to OS X El Capitan so far has included improvements to Messages, Notes, and other system apps. Apple is out with another weekly Apple Pay promotion. This time the company is drumming up awareness for its mobile payment solution with $5 off movie tickets with Fandango when you buy at least two. The window of this promotion is a bit shorter than others we’ve seen recently as it only goes through March 4. However, as a percentage (depending on your local prices), this could be one of the better deals to come through the program....
According to a report from the New York Post, Apple is planning to launch a new television streaming service by Christmas despite roadblocks with potential content partners. The report cited sources “familiar with the talks” between Apple’s Senior Vice President of Internet Software and Services Eddie Cue and content providers that have “largely balked” at Apple’s attempt to “exert control over all aspects” of negotiations: The report said Apple wants content providers to offer their channels through apps accessible on Apple TV as well as other Apple devices....
Update: Volvo has posted a CarPlay experience video. Apple has officially announced CarPlay in a press release. CarPlay is Apple’s new branding for the iOS in the Car feature originally announced at WWDC last year. Apple says CarPlay enables users to make calls, navigate maps, listen to music and access messages from the dash of compatible cars. Siri can be activated by pressing the dedicated button on the steering wheel. Apple describes the system as a “smarter, safer and more fun way” of using an iPhone in the car....

Following a positive outlook on Apple’s earnings call last week, Loup Ventures is out today with an in-depth look at the state of Apple Pay. Currently, Loup Ventures estimates that just 20 percent of global smartphone users rely on their phone as a wallet, but it expects that number to rise to 80 percent… Gene Munster of Loup Ventures estimate that Apple Pay currently has over 252 million users, which comes out to 31 percent of the active iPhone install base....
After launching in Hungary and Luxembourg last month, Apple Pay today has gone live in the Netherlands. This means that iPad, iPad, Apple Watch, and Mac users in the Netherlands can now use Apple’s mobile payment platform everywhere it is accepted. In the Netherlands, Apple Pay is supported by ING, which confirmed last month that it was in the process of rolling out Apple Pay. It’s unclear when or if other banks in the Netherlands will rollout Apple Pay support, but ING appears to be the only option for now....

According to Bloomberg, the technology is being enabled by Apple’s 2020 acquisition of a Canadian startup called Mobeewave. The firm, which cost Apple around $100 million, created assets that would allow existing smartphones to process credit card payments via built-in chips, like the ones that power Apple Pay in all modern iPhones. It worked with Samsung to bring similar payment acceptance functionality to its Galaxy series smartphones before its acquisition....
