It was reported earlier this month that Apple was close to striking a deal where it would make a large upfront investment in LG’s OLED production lines in return for output being exclusively devoted to iPhone screens. A fresh report today supports this, and claims to have more detailed information on the as-yet-unannounced arrangement … Korea Economic Daily (via The Investor) claims that the amount Apple is paying LG is 3 trillion won ($2....

AllThingsD reported that Apple is planning an event for late January to be held in New York, not in Cupertino or San Francisco, Calif. The event will not be huge nor will it cover any iPad or Apple TV related announcements. Apple’s Senior Vice President of Internet Services and Software Eddy Cue is said to be involved in the event, and the event is reportedly “media-related.” On a side note, Apple has an office for their iAd business in New York, the business that Cue is now in heading....

In a new interview with Reuters, European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager cleared Apple when asked about its mobile payment service and competitive issues in Europe … for now. In a bit of a burn from Vestager, she shared that Apple Pay doesn’t have the dominance in Europe yet that would prompt an investigation. Apple Pay is steadily expanding to new regions including Germany, however, which will expand Apple Pay’s reach. Vestager also told Reuters that she isn’t opposed to investigating Apple Pay over competitive violations if a formal complaint was filed....

Apple has released the fourth iOS 11 public beta for iPhone and iPad. This allows users who are not registered developers to test pre-release versions of iOS with new features for free. In terms of stability, the same warnings apply to any pre-release software: apps may crash, battery life won’t be optimal, and expect performance to be sluggish. Apple has released new beta versions of iOS and tvOS for developer testing. iOS and tvOS 11.2.5 beta 6 are now available on the developer center and over-the-air. We’ll update to the latest versions and note any changes below. The latest beta follows the official release of iOS 11.2.2 for iPhone and iPad. We haven’t seen version numbers in between the official release and the beta release (so maybe these are placeholder numbers pending additional bug fix updates)....

Apple has declared that Apple Pay is off to a “great start” almost a year after its launch with the company seeing steady growth in Apple Pay transactions every month. In a statement to Bloomberg, the company said: Apple Pay launched last year with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in the US. The service expanded to the UK a few months ago. In Apple’s January investor call, Cook claimed 2015 was “the year of Apple Pay”....

Following IDC’s report this morning that highlighted Apple’s continued growth among mobile phone marketshare worldwide, while coming second to Samsung in global smartphone marketshare, research firm comScore just released its numbers for United States mobile subscribers for the three-month period ending March 2012. According to comScore, Apple posted impressive growth during the quarter with 30.7-percent marketshare among smartphone platforms in the U.S (up from 29.6-percent). Increasing from 47.3-percent in December 2011 to 51 percent in March 2012, Android was able to grab the top position for platforms during the quarter....

Apple has issued a fifth developer and public beta release of iOS 9.3.3 ahead of its general release. iOS 9.3.3 beta 5 follows the last build issued a week ago which suggests a general release will soon follow. Apple is likely testing iOS 9.3.3 heavily as it could be the last version of iOS 9 before iOS 10 is released later this fall. OS X 10.11.6 and tvOS 9.2.2 updates to the Mac and Apple TV have also been in development over the last several weeks as macOS 10....

Apple is releasing the first beta of iOS 14.2 to public beta testers today. This comes after the release to developers last week, as well as last week’s release of iOS 14 to everyone. iOS 14.2 includes a few notable changes for iPhone users. In iOS 14.2 beta 1, there are revamped now playing controls on the lock screen alongside redesigned AirPlay 2 controls in the Control Center. Another one of the new changes in iOS 14....

After first teasing it last December and releasing it in beta at WWDC, Apple’s new ‘Apple TV Remote’ app for the new Apple TV is now available to download from the App Store. The app can replace previous Remote app that lacked support for some of the new features on the fourth-gen Apple TV, although it’s missing a few features in the initial version. For example, the new Apple TV Remote app isn’t available as an iPad-optimized app and you won’t find the same Home Sharing features that let you control iTunes on a Mac....

Apple has released the watchOS 3.1.3 software update for all Apple Watch users. The release notes confirm that the update is focused on bug fixes and performance improvements as suggested by the version number. watchOS 3.1.1 was the previous public version of the Apple Watch operating system, although the update was temporarily pulled after issues with bricking certain hardware. watchOS 3.1.3 is the current version, and a watchOS 3.1.2 update was not released....

While all eyes are on the iPhone 8/Edition due to be announced next week, Apple is of course already working on next year’s models. A supply-chain report hints at one new feature: a camera offering more than 12MP resolution … The Digitimes report claims that Apple has already placed orders for the higher-resolution camera modules. However, the timing rules out use in this year’s iPhones. The report says that small-volume production will begin in October, and ramp up into Q4....

In its latest original content efforts, Apple is working on closing a deal to turn the film Time Bandits into a TV series. As reported by Deadline, the show will be co-produced by Anonymous Content, Paramount Television, and Media Rights Capital. The report doesn’t give much more information beyond that, but that’s expected. Especially, if the company is still working on closing the deal and has yet to start production....

Apple has made a notable hire this month with a storied career in the automative industry. As first reported by Bloomberg, Steve MacManus has joined Apple as a “Senior Director” working out of Apple Park in Cupertino. It’s unclear what specific areas MacManus will focus on at Apple, but Bloomberg notes that he has extensive interior design skills. These skills “may be applicable at Apple beyond the development of a car,” the report says....

France-based Hardmac reports that Apple is readying a remote iOS device testing tool for deployment to its service personell. It is web based and will send the diagnostic information, relatively anonymously, to Apple technicians. A tool of this sort is already in use by Apple technicians but Hardmac claims that this once can be used remotely. This would be a pretty clever and powerful tool to do basic diagnostics on iOS devices which could help technicians diagnose and fix device problems over the phone, saving both the customers and Apple time and effort....

After almost a month since the first beta of 11.2, Apple has released the macOS Big Sur 11.2 beta 2 for developers as well as the public. Update 1:06 pm PT: macOS 11.2 beta 2 is now also available for those running the public beta. Check for the update in System Preferences > Software Update. It’s not clear yet what changes macOS 11.2 beta 2 will include but we’ll be diving in shortly to discover just that....

Apple issued pre-release versions of Safari for OS X Mountain Lion, Mavericks, and Yosemite today for developers. The Safari beta versions include Safari 8.0.1, 7.1.1, and 6.2.1 for OS X 10.10, 10.9, and 10.8, respectively. As part of the pre-release software, Apple asks users to focus on these areas for testing: • General website compatibility • Extension compatibility • WebGL graphics on Retina displays • Password AutoFill when passwords are synchronized across multiple devices • Syncing history between devices (OS X Yosemite only) • Importing usernames and passwords from Firefox (OS X Yosemite only)...

The Information corroborates a claim from Bloomberg last May, saying that Apple will add support for subscribing to streaming services through the TV app. This would mean that you’d be able to subscribe to something like HBO Now directly through the TV app, rather than having to go to the HBO app itself. Today’s report says that Apple is telling entertainment companies “whose offerings will be available through the service” to be ready for launch by mid-April....

Apple is rolling out the sixth iOS 10.3 beta for developer testing on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. The upcoming software update includes Find My AirPods support, CarPlay improvements, Apple’s new filesystem, and more. We’ll update and highlight any additional changes discovered below. iOS 10.3 is currently only available in beta for registered developers and public beta testers. The public beta version of each update usually follows a few days after the developer version if not the same day....

A day after Apple made the macOS Big Sur beta 9 available to developers alongside the iOS 14.2 beta 2, the fourth macOS Big Sur public beta has arrived. If you’re enrolled in the Big Sur public beta, you can check to see if the latest release is available on your Mac by heading to System Preferences > Software Update.
