Roughly two weeks after the previous build with Apple Music support included, Apple has released iOS 9 beta 4 for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch to registered developers. iOS 9 includes new or redesigned built-in apps including the Flipboard-like News app and an overhauled Notes app, powerful iPad multitasking features, and a new system feature built around search and intelligence called Proactive. The previous beta included the first look at Apple’s News app, support for Apple Music and Beats 1, and other changes including Screenshots and Selfies albums in Photos and 4×4 app folders on the iPad....
Apple has released a supplemental security update to OS X El Capitan, the version prior to macOS Sierra. The update weighs in at 623.9MB and can be found in the Mac App Store on compatible machines. Today’s supplemental security update pushes a fix to El Capitan to help mitigate a kernel issue where the Mac would occasionally become unresponsive. Users currently running OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 can find Security Update 2016-003 in their Mac App Store Updates tab....
Following yesterday’s misfire on the public beta channel, Apple has released OS X El Capitan Beta 7 (build 15A263e) to developers. The fifth public beta has also returned after being pulled yesterday afternoon. That version comes with a build number of 15A262e, which puts it a few builds ahead of yesterday’s. The developer update is available in the updates tab of the Mac App Store and will be on the Developer Center shortly....
Further pushing toward the idea of a plugin-free internet, Apple has issued an update to Java for OS X that removes the Java applet plugin. Attempting to use a Java applet through any OS X web browser will now prompt users to download the latest version directly from Java maker Oracle. This is not the first time Apple has stopped shipping a specific browser plugin with their computers. With OS X Lion, users discovered that their Macs no longer came with Adobe’s oft-derided Flash Player plugin due to its instability and security issues....

One refreshed Mac lineup that we expected to see today regarded the Mac Pros. While Apple did not mention them onstage during its keynote this morning, its website is now updated to include new CPU options for the machine that otherwise appears to remain largely unchanged. The new $2,499 base model of the Mac Pro will come with one 3.2GHz quad-core Intel Xeon processor, 6GB of RAM, and a 1TB hard drive....
Apple has re-released last month’s minor iOS 9.3.2 software update after pulling it due to customer complaints of bricking iPad Pros. The updated version features build number 13F72 and is available through official channels now. Updating a bricked iPad requires connecting it to iTunes on a Mac or PC using the Lightning cable. The issue only affected some 9.7-inch iPad Pros, but resulted in bricked devices when trying to update to the minor software update....
Over a year after the initial issue, Apple is still facing pushback over its decision to slow down older iPhones in conjunction with aging batteries. Today, a consumer watchdog group in the UK announced that Apple has agreed to notify customers if future iOS updates will affect an iPhone’s performance. As noted by CNBC, the UK Competition and Markets Authority started investigating the issue in early 2018. This came after Apple admitted in December of 2017 that it throttled older iPhones in conjunction with battery age....
For a while now Apple has been providing its official WWDC app for iOS, which allows developers to watch live and recorded videos of its Worldwide Developers Conference every year, and also navigate around while attending the conference live. With more recent years, Apple has been publishing other types of content to this app, including technical videos of new features in recently released hardware such as new iPhones or iPads. It looks like this change has prompted Apple to rename the WWDC app to simply be called “Apple Developer”....
The US Patent & Trademark Office this week granted Apple a patent for a new magnetic connector capable of transmitting power to the iPhone. This comes after rumors that Apple is considering removing the Lightning port from its smartphones in the future. As reported by Patently Apple, the patent shows a new type of connector that can be somewhat compared to the iPad’s Smart Connector and even the MagSafe from older MacBooks....
Later this month, Apple will be seeding an updated version of its mobile point-of-sale (EasyPay) system software to Apple Store employees. This update, numbered version 12.3, will allow retail employees with EasyPays to capture Apple Store payment card codes from customer iPhones and iPod touches running Passbook. While Apple’s EasyPay software should be ready for Passbook this month, some sources noted that the current EasyPay hardware, at least at some retail stores, may not be capable of scanning iOS device displays....
Apple has quietly removed customer reviews for products from its online store sometime this month. This means that potential buyers can no longer see reviews of products sold via Apple’s online store before they buy, while those who have already bought are unable to leave reviews. Apple sells numerous different products through its online store, including its own products and accessories, as well as items from third-party companies. Up until now, a “Ratings and Reviews” section would appear under the product listing, allowing customers to read other shoppers’ thoughts on that particular product....
Apple releases two reports each year on how customer data is requested by governments and private parties as part of its privacy effort. While the reports are generally fairly general, the latest report released this week includes a notable change from previous versions… Apple’s latest “Report on Government and Private Party Requests for Customer Information” covering the period between July 1 and December 31 last year includes one declassified national security letter during the six month period, which The Verge notes is a first for this disclosure report....
Update: Apple has also released macOS Catalina beta 9 to developers. Apple today has released the first developer beta of watchOS 6.1 to testers. This comes after the release of watchOS 6 to the public last week for Apple Watch Series 3 and Apple Watch Series 4. Apple tomorrow will release iPadOS and iOS 13.1 to the public, but we don’t yet have a release date for watchOS 6.1. We’re also still waiting on watchOS 6 for the Series 1 and Series 2 and macOS Catalina, both of which are coming later this fall....
Apple has released a special ‘Shot on iPhone’ TV commercial for European markets called ‘The beautiful game’. It features iPhone photography of football stadiums, goalposts and players. The ad will likely air during the UEFA European Football Championship games, which kicks off tomorrow … Apple says the ad shows off the ‘beauty of football, captured by fans and their iPhones’ and features the music single ‘Wings’ by Little Sims. The ad uses photos and videos from a variety of photographers … who should now expect a memento from California come holiday season....
