China Business (via The Register) claims that Apple has returned between 5m and 8m iPhones due to quality issues. It’s not known which handsets are affected. The Register calculates that the total hit to Foxconn could be $1.6bn, but that of course assumes that the numbers are accurate and that nothing can be salvaged from the rejected phones. This is unlikely. Foxconn posted record profits in the final quarter of 2012 before experiencing a 19% year-on-year drop in the first quarter of this year....

Apple has issued a minor update for Final Cut Pro X 10.3 to squash several bugs. The 197MB update, which comes shortly after the major 10.3 release, fixes issues related to updating libraries, and more. All Final Cut Pro X users running 10.3 are encouraged to update to version 10.3.1. I’ve personally experienced many annoying crashes since updating to 10.3, so I’m hoping that this will eliminate the issues that I’ve been having....

Following the public release of iOS 13.5.1 today, Apple has also released the first beta of iOS 13.5.5 and iPadOS 13.5.5 to developers. This update likely focuses on bug fixes and performance improvements. Apple is releasing iOS 14.2 GM to developer beta testers today, and to public beta testers. Notably, today’s new iOS 14.2 GM should bring a fix for the erroneous “A new iOS update is now available. Please update from the iOS 14 beta” notification that many users are seeing right now. iOS 14.2 GM is rolling out now and can be found in the Settings application. The release of this beta is particularly notable given the notification about a non-existent update many users have been seeing for the past 24 hours....

Apple’s programing language Swift saw its first preview release branch for 3.0 hit yesterday as the programming language moves closer to a finalized 3.0 release due later this year. Though nowhere near a final release of Swift 3.0, this marks the beginning of the major Swift revisions that developers will see coming later this year. According to the Swift-Evolution GitHub page, the primary goal of Swift 3.0 is to “solidify and mature the Swift language and development experience....

Ahead of the release of the iPhone X in less than a week, Apple has reminded developers to get their apps ready for the device. In a post on its developer blog, Apple is reminding developers to test their apps using the iPhone X simulator in Xcode code… Apple’s post is a simple heads-up for developers to test new iPhone X features in their app using Xcode and subsequently capture screenshots and upload the new metadata and app to iTunes Connect....

A source says that Atienza will be the director of all retail matters for many regions within the West Coast of the United States, and this role is one of the highest ranking retail positions inside of Apple. Several internal and external candidates were considered for the position, but the external Atienza is said to have been the best fit. While Atienza has already signed on with Apple, he is yet to actually begin his management role....

Apple has just released the fifth iOS 10.1 beta, marking the second developer beta released this week. iOS 10.1 includes the Portrait camera for iPhone 7 Plus that applies a DSLR-like blur effect over photos using the dual lens system. The iOS 10.1 beta 5 is a larger download, weighing in at 1.95 GB. The beta is available to registered developers and public beta testers. Apple has also pushed out the beta 5 for macOS Sierra 10....

Apple has released iOS 14.6 beta 3 to developers today, alongside iPadOS 14.6 beta 3. The updates are rolling out now to registered developers via the Settings application, coming just under two weeks after the release of beta 2. Update: Now rolling out to public beta users as well. Apple Pay lets you make purchases in stores with your iPhone or Apple Watch with security and convenience, and select retailers like Walgreens also support Apple Pay-based reward cards. Soon even more loyalty cards will be supported through Apple Pay in Apple’s Wallet app thanks to Punchh’s Restaurant Marketing Cloud. Punchh works with over 85 restaurant chains including Quiznos, Smashburger, Pieology, and Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf and announced plans today to bring Apple Pay-based loyalty card support to its client restaurant locations....

Just moments after releasing the second beta of iOS 9.3.2 to developers, Apple has now released a fresh beta of OS X. The latest released version of OS X released to developers is version 10.11.5. Apple pushed the first tvOS 9.2.1 and OS X 10.11.5 betas two weeks ago, focusing primarily on under-the-hood bug fixes and improvements for developers. These updates are far smaller than the recent tvOS 9.2 and OS X 10....

Over a dozen more banks and credit unions around the United States have turned on support for Apple Pay in Apple’s mid-August update. The latest additions follow a larger rollout to over 40 institutions around the country earlier this month and Apple Pay’s first international debut in the UK last month. Apple won’t take the wraps off of its upcoming Beats-based music streaming service at its March 9 “Spring Forward” event, according to music industry sources briefed on the launch timeline. Instead, Apple currently plans to introduce the service, at least in beta form, at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in early June. The WWDC keynote likely takes place on Monday, June 8th, and that’s the event where the debut will occur....

Following Monday’s report that Apple is planning to launch Apple Pay in China in February of next year, Bloomberg reports that it has reached a preliminary agreement with UnionPay to use its card-processing terminals. The agreement was an essential step along the way as UnionPay has a monopoly on card-processing in China. The agreement is provisional, as it still requires the individual banks to agree. They have reportedly been reluctant to agree to the 0....

Apple today released iOS 14.4.2 for iPhone and iPad, and watchOS 7.3.3 for Apple Watch. The updates includes an important security fix for WebKit, which Apple says may have been actively exploited. The company also released a patch update to iOS 12, version 12.5.2, so that iPhone 6, iPhone 5s, third-generation iPad mini, first-generation iPad Air and the sixth-generation iPod touch users can also benefit from the security fixes. Apple said that a bug in WebKit could allow malicious web site to perform activate arbitrary cross-site scripting....

During its earnings call earlier this week, Apple touted the continued growth of Apple Pay and teased support for new apps and transit services this year. Now, the UK government has started accepted Apple Pay for some online payment services. As detailed by ITV, the gov.uk website is now accepting Apple Pay for four of its online services. The online platforms supporting Apple Pay include the Global Entry Services, the disclosure and barring service checks, the Registered Traveler Service, and the Electronic Visa Waiver Service....

The Center for Hearing and Communication announced today that Apple is being awarded the Eleanor Roosevelt Award for its “major strides in creating accessible technology for people with disabilities.” The award was first noted by reporter Steven Aquino on Twitter. Accepting the Eleanor Roosevelt Award on Apple’s behalf is Sarah Herrlinger, the company’s senior director of global accessibility policy and initiatives. Herrlinger will be presented the award tonight at the Center for Hearing and Communication’s “Transforming Lives” event in New York City....

Out of the blue, Apple has today launched their first battery case, the Apple iPhone 6s Smart Battery Case for $99. The case comes in Charcoal Gray or White and is compatible with iPhone 6s or iPhone 6. The case is like the Apple Silicone Case, with the addition of a back bump for a battery. Third-party iPhone battery cases have existed for a long time, this is the first version of the product from Apple itself....

Apple has released the first iOS 10.2 beta for iPhone and iPad to registered developers. The update follows the public release of iOS 10.1.1 earlier today for all users.
