Apple has released iOS 11.1 for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. The latest software update adds hundreds of new emoji characters including new expressions, vampires and zombies, breastfeeding, dinosaurs and many more. Other changes include the return of the 3D Touch gesture for multitasking, a smoother scroll-to-top animation, and other bug fixes and improvements. Apple first previewed these new emoji over the summer then teased them again in recent betas. Now iOS 11....

Apple has released iOS 6.0.1 to iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch users. Apple says that this update includes various improvements and bug fixes. Fixes a bug that prevents iPhone 5 from installing software updates wirelessly over the air Fixes a bug where horizontal lines may be displayed across the keyboard Fixes an issue that could cause camera flash to not go off Improves reliability of iPhone 5 and iPod touch (5th generation) when connected to encrypted WPA2 Wi-Fi networks Resolves an issue that prevents iPhone from using the cellular network in some instances Consolidated the Use Cellular Data switch for iTunes Match Fixes a Passcode Lock bug which sometimes allowed access to Passbook pass details from lock screen Fixes a bug affecting Exchange meetings The iPhone 5 apparently shipped with a bug that does not allow the device to receive over-the-air updates....

Following the release of OS X 10.10.3 to the public, Apple has also released iOS 8.3 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. The update, which has been in beta for several months, brings over 300 new emojis (including diversity options) as well as a new keyboard for inputting the symbols. The new keyboard features a scrolling UI, rather than the old page metaphor, to better accommodate the wider range of emojis available in the update....

[UPDATE: Apple’s system status page says the issues are now resolved after four hours.] If you’re currently experiencing issues with iCloud Mail or Notes, then you’re not alone. Apple is currently reporting an ongoing iCloud outage affecting a small percentage of users (which is probably still a lot of people at Apple’s scale) when sending and receiving email with iCloud Mail or using iCloud Notes. According to Apple’s System Status page, the small outage has been ongoing for almost two hours, although Apple typically acknowledges outages some time after they occur and not immediately....

Apple has rolled out Apple Pay support for another 24 banks and credit unions following last month’s expansion reaching more than 200 in total. The newly added banks include more than a dozen banks and credit unions from around the United States including The Bancorp Bank which backs Simple, a popular online banking service. Mactracker, the definitive app for tracking Apple product information, received a substantial update today, on the Mac’s 30th birthday. Both the OS X and iOS versions have, for the first time, added Apple’s non-Macintosh computers to the database, including the entire Apple II line, and many early Apple monitors and accessories. If you haven’t picked up the app yet, it’s free on both the Mac and iOS App Stores, and is a must have for all Apple enthusiasts....

As expected, Apple has pushed out an upgrade to the Retina MacBook Pro lineup. Both the 15-inch and 13-inch models were updated, and two models received price drops. Each 15-inch model received a modest processor speed bump, starting with a new 2.2 GHz chip in the base model, followed by 2.5 GHz in the upgraded version. The Turbo Boost speeds of each model are now up to 3.4 and 3.7 GHz, respectively....

Apple introduced a web version of Apple Music last year, which was available as a beta preview until April this year when the Apple Music web was officially announced. The company is now relaunching the beta version of the Apple Music website with the new Listen Now tab and more. The Listen Now tab was introduced to Apple Music with iOS 14 and Big Sur macOS to replace the For You tab....

Following CEO Tim Cook saying that the car industry is ripe for a major disruption, Re/code reports that Apple has hired Jonathan Cohen, Nvidia’s director of deep learning. While many only associate Nvidia with phone and computer chips, the company has recently been entering the car market, specifically in the form of autonomous vehicles. Nvidia has recently started selling its chips to car manufacturers, who then use those chips to power cameras and radars that do the behind-the-scenes work of allowing a car to drive autonomously....

Apple has made two incredibly thorough white papers available today covering the Mac Pro and Pro Display XDR. These “Technology Overview” documents highlight the inner workings of both of Apple’s newest pro-grade pieces of hardware. In the Mac Pro Technology Overview, which is dated February 2020, Apple details everything you need to know about the tower machine. There are details on architecture, the physical enclosure, different configuration options, and much more....

Last month, the ransomware group REvil breached Apple supplier Quanta, gaining access to detailed schematics of past and future Apple products. The ransomware leak revealed details of the forthcoming MacBook Pro update, including specific information about the addition of new I/O options on the side. A new report from Motherboard today details how the leaked schematics are also helping repair experts learn more about Apple’s internal design. The report explains that independent repair shops are turning to these leaked schematics to help customers access data and offer additional repair services....

Apple is beginning final preparations to launch an iPhone trade-in program in its retail stores by next month, according to sources with knowledge of the initiative. This trade-in program will allow customers that own earlier versions of the iPhone, such as the iPhone 4S, to bring the phone into an Apple Store and exchange it for a new iPhone model, like the iPhone 5, at a discounted price… On the allure of a trade-in program, Apple CEO Tim Cook said during the last earnings call that he is “not opposed” to such a strategy....

Wintercore’s Ruben Santamarta claims Apple has failed to clean up some old code nested within QuickTime which can leave Internet Explorer vulnerable to yet another of the Microsoft browser’s long line of potential attacks. The exploit is simple to execute just by tricking a user into visiting a malicious site hosting the exploit code, a so-called “drive-by” attack. The attack code works when someone browses with IE on a machine running Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 that has QuickTime 7....

Apple today issued a firmware update for Apple TV after earlier this week rolling out a new iMovie Theater channel that allows users to view movies and other video content uploaded to iCloud through iMovie Theater on other iOS devices. Today’s firmware update brings Apple TV software up to version 6.0.1, build number 11B511d, and is available for second and third generation Apple TVs through Settings>General >Software Update. The update brings “general performance and stability improvements,” but we’ll update you here if we discover any new goodies....

Apple surprisingly released yesterday the first developer beta of macOS Big Sur 11.0.1, which came even before macOS Big Sur was officially available to the public. Today, the company released macOS Big Sur 11.0.1 as a public beta. macOS Big Sur 11.0.1 doesn’t bring any new features compared to the previous macOS Big Sur beta, but Apple has included several new wallpapers — which you can download all here. Apple is presumably holding the first public release of macOS Big Sur for its rumored event in November, in which the company is expected to introduce the first Apple Silicon Mac....

Shortly after announcing its availability today, Apple has now released iOS 8.2 for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. For iPhone users, the update adds support for the Apple Watch coming next month and improvements to the Health app. The update is available to download over-the-air through the Settings app. An updated version of the Apple TV software is also available for third-generation boxes. For developers, Xcode 6.2 is available in the Mac App Store....

After many beta releases on the Developer Center, Apple has just released OS X Lion 10.7.4 to the masses this afternoon via Software Update. The update weighs in at 729.6MB and fixes the horrible bug in OS X 10.7.3 that stored passwords in plain text, along with many other stability improvements among other things. Apple announced today that it will release iOS 14 to the public on September 16. iOS 14 includes a variety of new features and changes, such as home screen widgets, the App Library, and much more. iOS 14 is a significant update for iPhone users, bringing long-awaited support for Home screen widgets, as well as a new App Library feature for organizing apps that you don’t want to keep on your Home screen....

Update: Now available for American Express cardholders as well. Seven years since the original launch of Apple Pay in the US, the service continues its worldwide expansion with Mexico. Starting today, Citibanamex (part of Citibank group) and Banorte clients can add their cards to the iPhone’s Wallet. Mexico has been waiting a long time for Apple Pay. The country is the first addition to Apple Pay in 2021. The last one to get the service was Serbia, in June of 2020....
