Apple has released the fifth beta to developers for the upcoming iOS 8.2 release. The update is available both over-the-air from the Settings app on iOS as well as through the iOS Dev Center. The release includes bug fixes and improvements. Apple has also released Xcode 6.2 beta 5 with WatchKit with build number 6C121 on the iOS Dev Center. A new beta version of Apple TV software for Apple TV (third-gen) is also available through the iOS Dev Center....

After several beta releases, Apple today released the 10.9.3 software update to OS X Mavericks. The update is recommended for all users running OS X Mavericks, and brings a list of improvements including improved support for 4K displays. The update also restores contacts and calendar syncing from Macs to iOS devices over USB which was previously removed in favor of OTA syncing. We all know Apple, like most big tech companies, files a lot of patent applications for inventions that will likely never see the light of day. Today we get a look at a couple of its latest patent applications via documents published by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office and detailed by PatentlyApple. On the more believable side, we get one that includes a new animated lock screen that would provide quick access to frequently used apps via a new animated feature accessible through a home button that could also recognize touch and pressure input (pictured above)....

Apple has today released the second supplemental update for 2018 MacBook Pros running macOS High Sierra 10.13.6. The initial supplemental update, if you recall, was to fix the alleged throttling issues with the latest generation MacBook Pros, which Apple said was a firmware bug. Back in November of 2016, Apple released the ‘Designed By Apple In California’ book, which highlights its storied design history. Sometime recently, however, Apple has removed the book from its online store in the United States. Apple still has a page on its website dedicated to ‘Designed By Apple In California,’ but the link to purchase the book now leads you to an error page. The text on that webpage invites users to buy the book, even though it’s seemingly no longer available....

The launch of Apple Pay, Apple’s NFC and Touch ID-based mobile payment solution, is upon us. In an unlisted video, Apple is promoting the new iPad Pro with the series “Your next computer is not a computer.” This time, the company creates a parody of The Little Mermaid’s “Part of Your World” song. The ad was found by a Twitter user early this morning. Apparently, it was uploaded on June 3, before WWDC21 and the iPadOS 15 announcement. When Apple began reopening some of its US retail stores in May, the company promised it wouldn’t hesitate to close locations again if necessary. Following new COVID-19 spikes across the country, Apple plans to follow through and temporarily close 11 of its US stores. The US has struggled to keep COVID-19 case numbers down as states allow businesses to reopen and people attempt a return to normal life. Apple pays attention to local health data and has identified locations in Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Arizona to temporarily re-close out of an abundance of caution....

Apple has just released iOS 9.3.3 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. In addition to iOS 8.4, Apple has now publicly released OS X 10.10.4 to all users. The point update focuses on security and stability improvements with a fix for notable networking issues with OS X Yosemite as well as fixes for Mail, improvements to Photos migration from iPhoto and Aperture, and more. Apple today released OS X 10.11 Public Beta 3 to non-developer testers trying El Capitan ahead of its public release later this fall. The latest public beta version follows the off-cycle release of OS X 10.11 developer beta 5 seeded out on Monday. Prior to these off-cycle releases, Apple typically stuck to releasing updates roughly two weeks apart. Apple last updated public beta users a week ago. OS X El Capitan includes several performance and security improvements including better window management and a new Rootless security layer....

Apple drew a lot of attention earlier this year when it debuted its own blog dedicated to updating developers on Swift, its programming language for building Mac and iOS apps first introduced at WWDC in June. The blog has since been used to share updates on the state of Swift as well as technical details about the programming language, but today Apple posted an official video tutorial (embedded below) targeted for new Swift developers on using the language and Xcode to build an app for iOS from scratch....

The company is understood to have reached deals with Disney, Paramount, Twentieth Century Fox, Warner Brothers, Lions Gate and MGM under which iTunes in both named countries will begin offering popular films for purchase and rental using Apple’s service. The move is likely to help boost Apple TV sales, and to improve the utility of iPod and iPhones. Despite the lack of costs of manufacture or distribution of physical product, the studios have insisted they don’t want to undercut DVD prices with the move, suggesting prices for films will be set between £6 and £25, depending on the title, according to a report in The Times....

Samsung may be the exclusive supplier of OLED screens for the iPhone 8, but it seems that Apple is taking significant steps to diversify its supply chain. Not only is the company reportedly close to striking a deal with LG, but Apple is said to be making a large up-front investment in the company’s OLED production lines in return for output being exclusively devoted to iPhone screens … Samsung is currently the world’s leading supplier of OLED panels, with around a 95% share of smartphone-sized panels, and was last week said to be trying to consolidate its position by building the world’s largest production plant for the display technology....

Apple Pay has slowly been making its way around the world, but there are still a variety of countries where the service hasn’t launched. Today, however, Polish website iMagazine discovered a handful of hints on Apple’s website that suggest Apple Pay may soon be coming to Germany and Italy. This isn’t the first we’ve heard of Apple Pay potentially coming to Germany. In October of last year, Apple’s website in Germany accidentally housed a pair of German-langauge documents that suggested Apple was soon launching Apple Pay in the country....

Apple this week hosted two live events at its flagship store in Milan for the first time since the pandemic began. Film screenings celebrating Milano MovieWeek were held in the outdoor amphitheater at Apple Piazza Liberty, with safety measures and physical distancing enforced. On September 17 and 18, “Between Cinema and Music” recognized Milan’s filmmaking legacy with two screenings hosted in collaboration with Apple TV+ and Apple Music. Apple set up a large outdoor display at the entrance to Apple Piazza Liberty and allowed a small numbers of viewers to attend through an online ticketing system....

Apple is highlighting some of the iPhone’s key differentiators with a new webpage and several fun animations posted on YouTube. The page is currently live on Apple’s German website, and will likely roll out to other countries soon. On the page, Apple explains their belief that the iPhone is more than just a device itself. From energy efficiency and recycling to privacy, each iPhone is a product of design decisions made along the way....

We are expecting significant updates to the iPad and Mac lines later this year, and Apple appears to be getting in the admin work early as five new iPad and five new Mac models have turned up in the Eurasian Economic Commission database as found by Consomac. The filing says that these new devices are running iOS 11 and macOS 10.13, which is unusual as we’d typically expect Apple to ship these hardware updates with the new flagship software releases, iOS 12 and macOS Mojave....
